Timp Glacier from Aspen Grove Trailhead<br />via Emerald Lake

Timp Glacier from Aspen Grove Trailhead
via Emerald Lake

Hike Time (roundtrip): 6.0 to 10.0 hours
 Distance (roundtrip): 10.6 miles
 Elevation Gain: 4375 feet
 Main Aspect: ALL
Climb Rate: 825 feet per mile
 Average Grade: 16%
Notes: Some people say it’s just a year round snowfield. Either way, if the snow hasn’t melted away from the top of the saddle, it’s a real rush glissading down it. The first few hundred feet, you can’t control your speed, but after that, your speed and direction are very controllable. You can slide 1000 to 1200 ft and drop around 400 ft. It’s very cold though. 7

Distance from Fee Station: 11.6 miles
Area: Alpine Loop / Timpanogos
Area Location: Starts in American Fork Canyon or Provo Canyon

Waypoint 1
Timpanogos Falls
Elevation: 7120  AKA: Aspen Grove Falls
 Feature: Falls
Notes: The trail is relatively easy to both falls. It is paved in sections. In addition to the falls, you also have a great view of Primrose Cirque.
Waypoint 2
Primrose Cirque
 Elevation: 9880  Feature: Cirque
Notes: The land of many water falls. If you happen to be in this area in early July, you will pass more waterfalls than any other area in Utah (that I know of).
Waypoint 3
Hidden Lakes
 Elevation: 9860  Feature: Lake
Notes: Start watching for the Timp Mountain Goat herd near Hidden Lakes. I see them every year between here and Emerald Lake. There was a herd of about 40 goats hanging out at the lake when I was there in 2009.
Waypoint 4
Emerald Lake
 Elevation: 10360  Feature: Lake
Notes: I love the color of Emerald Lake. I could just stare at it for hours. The lake is at the base of the Timp Glacier, so depending on the time of the year, it might be turquoise blue, or green. It often has red streaked snow (watermelon snow) around it. During busy times of the year, TERT will station volunteers at the shelter to aid others who might need help.

Destination
Timp Glacier
 Elevation: 11260  Feature: Cirque
Notes: Glissading down the glacier is often a highlight of a Mount Timpanogos hike. Both Negative and positive memories can result. Wear gloves and cover your arms and legs to reduce snow burn (you get going pretty fast).
