Trail Details

Second Hamongog from Jacobs Ladder TH<br />via Lone Rock

Second Hamongog from Jacobs Ladder TH
via Lone Rock

Hike Time (roundtrip): 4.5 to 7.5 hours
 Distance (roundtrip): 9 miles
 Elevation Gain: 2450 feet
 Main Aspect: South
Climb Rate: 544 feet per mile
 Average Grade: 10%
Notes: Second Hamongog is a meadow near the invisible line where thick forest growing in rich soil transitions to sparse trees fight for a foothold, growing out of cracks in solid granite slabs. If you’re doing an overnighter to Lone Peak, Bighorn or Lake Hardy, this is a great place to set up camp. 2

Trailhead
Jacobs Ladder TH
Trailhead Elevation: 5700 ft
Trailhead Outhouse: Yes
Area: Salt Lake Valley
Area Location: Various locations on East Bench in Salt Lake
Area Fee: None
Dogs Allowed: No
Notes: Go to 12601 South Highland Dr, then follow the dirt road heading south. After several miles the road is gated and there is a dirt lot and restroom on the south. The trailhead up the road near the gate. Draper city just completed a project to reroute the trail to help with erosion. You will occasionally see mountain bike traffic on it, so be ready to hop out of the way.

Waypoint 1
Jacobs Ladder
 Elevation: 6890  Feature: Ridge
Notes: It is the incline you follow for most of the hike, until you are very close to Lone Rock. From there you can climb 2000 ft straight up (it seems) to Enniss Peak at the top of Draper Ridge.
Waypoint 2
Lone Rock
 Elevation: 7630  Feature: Rock Outcrop
Notes: The maps show Lone Rock about a quarter mile from where it really is, this is a little pet peeve of mine. If you look toward Jacobs Ladder from Alpine, its obvious where Lone Rock is. The maps show its located at the end of the rock incline.

Destination
Second Hamongog
 Elevation: 8150  Feature: Meadow
Notes: It is a good sized meadow surrounded on most sides by conifers. It is an excellent place to camp overnight if you want to rest before hitting the higher peaks.
